Frequently asked questions

Do I need a guide license?

No. Since 2018, Japanese law allows paid guiding without a license. Only the official 通訳案内士 title remains protected — it may only be used by license holders.

I'm a student in Japan — can I apply?

Yes, with a permission to engage in activity outside your status (資格外活動許可) and within the legal 28-hour weekly limit. This is checked during the interview.

How much can I earn?

You set your own prices. Full days generally range from ¥25,000 to ¥45,000 net to you, depending on your experience and themes.

When do I get paid?

On the 1st and 16th of each month, for tours completed more than 7 days prior, by transfer to your Japanese bank account.

Do I need to set up a company?

No company is required. You work as an independent contractor and remain responsible for your own tax filings and for any formalities that apply to your situation.

Can I guide only on weekends?

Yes. Your calendar is yours: you only open the dates that suit you, with no minimum activity.

The 3 golden rules of Japanzon Travel
  • You are independent, legally allowed to work, and insured.
  • You set YOUR price and receive 100% of it — the client pays +20% platform fees.
  • Everything goes through the platform: diverting a client off-platform = permanent exclusion.

Never enter your My Number: Japanese law (番号法) prohibits its collection. Your documents are checked during the video interview, never stored via this form.
