Getting Around Japan: Metro, Suica, Shinkansen and the JR Pass Decoded

Japan’s transport system is the best in the world — and the most intimidating on paper. In practice, three tools are enough: an IC card, a few shinkansen tickets, and the right apps. Full decoding.

The IC card: your daily key

Suica or ICOCA (same use): load it, tap it, and it pays for metro, buses, local trains, konbini and vending machines. A mobile version lives on your smartphone. It’s tool number one — get it at the airport.

The shinkansen without stress

Trains leave to the second, with departures every few minutes on major lines. Reserved or non-reserved cars (usually cars 1-3): outside peak periods, non-reserved is fine on Tokyo-Kyoto. Big suitcase? Oversized-baggage seats must be reserved (free). And the station bento bought on the platform is part of the experience.

JR Pass: the honest math

Since its steep price hike, the national pass is no longer the no-brainer it was. The simple rule: add up your long-distance trips on a route calculator and compare. A single Tokyo-Kyoto round trip does not pay for it. Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima-Tokyo gets close. Regional passes (Kansai, JR West, JR East…) are often the real deal — less known, much cheaper.

The apps that change everything

Google Maps handles Japanese transit remarkably (platforms, exit numbers, fares). For purists: Navitime or Japan Travel. Local tip: the exit number is urban Japan’s most precious piece of information — the wrong exit can cost you ten minutes of walking.

Taxis, buses, bikes: the rest of the puzzle

Taxis are pricey but impeccable (automatic doors, no tipping) and precious at night. City buses scare people for nothing: board, tap, get off. And the big cities are wonderful by bicycle — several of our guides have made it their specialty.
